What’s Next: Trades and Trade Schools

What's Next?

For many learners who are ready to head into the workforce, trades offer the option to start working and earning money quickly. The amount of time depends on the qualifications of the job. For industries that require a license, there is often a pathway of training, apprenticeship and then testing. For others, a certificate is enough. Typically there is some sort of official learning required which can be gained through a community college or trade school.

Trades include sectors such as construction, agriculture, industry, transportation, automotive, service and health care. Learners can find programs and certificates in animal husbandry, train operation, bus driving, cosmetology, dental and nursing services, and the list goes on. Federal and state financial aid is available to students at most trade schools in California. If a learner is eligible for a Pell or Cal Grant, the grant money follows that learner to a trade school or community college.

Knowing the pros and cons of trade education can help you explore your options. Most trade schools are required to have cost, debt, and employment disclosures available on their websites. If you cannot find this information, ask before you apply.

Before jumping into a trade school, make sure the trade is right for you! One way to explore is through YouScience, a career assessment available right here at iLEAD. You can obtain access through your Scoir account. If you do not have a Scoir account, reach out to your EF, your counselor, or the college advisor to get one set up.
